James II, the first monarch of the privative kingdom of Mallorca, had this building constructed in 1309 as a residence so that his son Sancho could find relief from his asthma.
It is believed that he had it built on the site of an old Moorish fortress: Mussa, from which the name Valldemossa was derived.
In 1399, King Martin I of Aragon, known as "the Humane", ceded all the royal possessions of Valldemossa to the Carthusian monks. They founded the Charterhouse and transformed the parade ground into a cloister and cemetery, the five halls into cells, the prison into a refectory, the pantry into a sacristy and the kitchen into a church.
In 1835 it passed into private hands through the disentailment of Mendizábal, which consisted of putting on the market, by public auction, the non-productive lands and goods of the Church or religious orders, with the aim of increasing the national wealth and creating a bourgeoisie and middle class of landowning farmers...
